When you select a single cell, the cell is highlighted with a colored border. When you select a range of cells, the range is highlighted with a colored border and all cells except the active cell are highlighted with a colored fill. System settings determine the highlight color, but if selected cells are not clearly visible, you can change to a color that provides more contrast.

Just because a border isn't defined in the style doesn't mean that one could not have been applied directly:-) If you reapply the Heading 2 style it may remove the border. However, in Word 2011 the Heading 2 style does include a bottom border as a part of its default specs. If you’ve added a border to a page in your document, you can remove it by changing the page border setting to None. Go to Design Page Borders. In the Borders and Shading box, on the Page Border tab, select the arrow next to Apply to and choose the page (or pages) you want to remove the border from.
